Tab tearing is a feature supported by web browsers. It allows users to detach a tab from the current window and move to another. This helps to compare two websites side by side and is useful if you have a multimonitor setup where you can move tabs across screens.
When it comes to Web Apps or Progressive Web Apps, the tearing of a tab opens it as a separate window within the app itself. Until now, Chrome has been the only browserthat supportedthis feature.
However, it seems that Microsoft is adding the tab tearing support to Web apps in Edge, as well. The feature is currently being tested in Edge Canary.
If you use a lot of web apps simultaneously, you may find this useful. Here is how to enable and use it:
Now, when you try to detach a YouTube app tab, it will automatically open in the App window rather than in the browser window. Do note, that you need to have Respective PWAs installed to try out this feature.
Tab Tearing for Web Apps in Edge is being experimented on Mac, Windows, Linux, and Android platforms. We can confirm Edge for Android has this experimental feature available.
Microsoft also recently made Designer the default image editor in Edge Canary, and together with its AI features, the Redmond-based tech giant is also allowing users to sort of copyright their content by adding andmanaging content credentials. The features will probably make it to the Edge stable channel in the following weeks.
It’s worth mentioning that not all features presented and tested in Edge Canary make it to the stable channel, and depending on users’ feedback, Microsoft might decide not to release them at all.
