Microsoft is testing a change in Edge Canary where it will automatically restore tabs without asking, every time a crash occurs. We have tried to crash the Edge intentionally and it has restored all tabs without asking on the next launch.
Previously, when a web browser crashed due to navigation to a webpage or other reasons, the browser with all tabs would close immediately. When you open the browser next time, the browser remembers it exited unexpectedly last time and prompts the user to restore tabs that were open at the time of the crash.
Now, Microsoft Edge shows the dialog “Restore pages. Microsoft Edge closed unexpectedly. The browser prompts users to hit the Restore button to get the pages from the previous session back.
Chrome also shows a similar dialog on startup after the crash, and it makes sense since both browsers are based on the Chromium code.
The main benefit of this feature is that now users won’t have to worry about losing their previous crashed browsing experience because they didn’t select the right button, and if I’m being honest, this is one of my main concerns every time this error happens: I always worry that I might somehow miss the button that prompts the browser to restore the pages.
So, ultimately, it’s quite useful and needed.
The feature is currently being A/B tested on select users in Edge Canary, and Microsoft might release it in the following weeks.
Edge Canary also introduced theTearing of Web App Tabs, allowing users to move webpages from one window to another, within the same session, and Microsoft also gave content creators further options tomanage content credentialswhen creating it using Designer, which is Edge’s newest image editor.
While we don’t know for sure if the features are going to make it to Edge’s stable channel, the Redmond-based tech giant is currently testing them on the Canary version.
