Steam Deck is one of the most popular gaming handhelds around, and even though the device comes with its operating system,there are ways to install Windows 11 on it quite easily.
It seems that once you get Windows 11 on a Steam Deck, you can use it for music production, according tothis Reddit post. And it’s quite useful too: the device is small, so it can be taken anywhere, and it can become a mini music studio on the go.
This Reddit user installed Windows 10 on their Steam Deck and managed to set it up to use it as a music production studio between playing games. Here’s how they did it:
I put windows 10 on a 512gb micro SD card and dual boot into windows, where I have a bunch of programs installed on the deck if I have no Wi-Fi and don’t mind limiting what I do……but for when I got good WiFi…..I sue Splashtop and RDP into my daw at my place, my work station…..and use pro tools and mixcraft and have access to my 3tb sound and effect libraries and I make some fire with it between playing games……anyone else do similar things with theirs?
Other Reddit users agree: one can install DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) software and run it on Steam Deck.
It runs Bitwig studio beautifully.
Second on this, I tested BitWig and it runs nicely. Still not really sure how much I would use this, as I have my laptop.. but it would be useful in a pinch.
I played my first DJ gig last year using a Steam Deck with Mixxx and a DJ2GO2 TOUCH controller.
The Steam Deck, however, is not just a good option for music production; the handheld console can be used for a variety of other things, such as working on artworks, watching TV, and some users even attended courses on the thing.
I did some Coursera IT and HR certifications on the Steam Deck and it worked out great other than some labs which I rather did on the computer.
So, owning a Steam Deck can be far more versatile than just gaming on it. At least this article can be used as an excuse and a motivation to buy one of those little beasts, right?
