Ever since Microsoft Edge got revamped, a lot of features were introduced, making it one of the best contenders among the mainstream browsers while providing the best browsing experience.

However, there is always scope for more, and it looks like Microsoft has stepped in the right direction. By enabling Profile-Guided Optimizations (PGO) for Mac with M2 processors, Edge is now 20% faster. PGO is a compiler optimization technique that is used to improve program runtime performance.

This step was taken as Microsoft treats the performance at which the browser renders webpages as the most important parameter.

After enabling PGO, Microsoft tested the browser speed over Speedometer 2.1; the score was more than 500 on Mac machines with M2, which was earlier under 450.

Upon using MotionMark, another performance benchmark tool for web pages full of animations and graphics, the score was significantly improved; take a look at the graph:

Upon running JetStream to measure how quickly browsers can start and run code, and to measure the responsiveness of a browser with code-intensive sites, again, there was a significant improvement:

Edge also made this move on Windows in 2020 and increased the speed by 13%. It is not the only one making this move. Other mainstream browsers, including Google Chrome, enabled the PGO eight years ago in version 53, which increased page load time by 5.9% and startup time by 16.8% approx.
