Microsoft Edge is a default browser in Windows 10 and Microsoft relies a lot of hopes in it, but it looks like it will get serious competition. Reportedly, Mozilla plans to release Windows 10 version of its Firefox browser, but it’s still unclear if it will be available in Windows Store on the launch of new operating system, on July 29th.But before anything more precise, we should go back three and and a half years ago, and remind you that Mozilla first announced Firefox for Windows 8 in February 2012, which is a couple of months before the OS’s release. The development period took a lot of time, including many delays, and the first version of Firefox for Windows 8 was finally released in February 2014. But even after a lot of effort the company put in developing Windows 8 version of Firefox, it abandoned development just a few weeks later. So, it would be completely reasonable to take the announcement of Firefox for Windows 10 with a little reserve.

Probably based on experience with Windows 8, Mozilla didn’t precise a release date for the new app, which is wise, because it won’t disappoint if they don’t develop the app on time. But Mozilla actually promised that Firefox will arrive soon on Microsoft’s upcoming OS.

It’s still not clear if Mozilla will release a full version in the Windows Store from day one, or if it plans to release beta versions first. But Mozilla said that it plans to deliver an “independent and high-performing alternative to the stock browser,” which means that Mozilla wants Firefox to already start competing with Microsoft’s Edge browser. It is well-known that Mozilla beat Microsoft in desktop browsers market, because Firefox is way more popular than Internet Explorer, but it’s going to be interesting to see how users will accept Universal versions.
